Welcome to the First Dose

Introducing "Microdosing the Republic." Small doses of clarity in a country overdosing on chaos.

There’s a lot I don’t know. But! There’s a lot I do know. 😉 Mainly because I’ve lived it, questioned it, or stayed up too late trying to make sense of it. (And I’m still learning, btw.)

Somewhere between political disillusionment, late-night group chats, and mourning the loss of my mother, I realized I had to start writing again. Not just for my catharsis, but because I believe that there are many things worth defending – and, if I don’t speak up, how can I challenge leaders or peers who I don’t think are meeting the moment?

This space is where I unpack the fun, messy aspects of being American, informed, and extremely online. And where I can be unashamedly myself in:

  • ✊🏾 Reflecting on American power and foreign policy

  • 🧠 Exploring how we talk about truth in the age of spin

  • ❤️‍🩹 Writing personal dispatches on grief, growth, and being gay, black, and anxious while living in NYC with clarity

  • 🤹🏽‍♂️ Delivering some occasional side effects... like hot takes, stray thoughts, and media critiques

What’s Coming Up First

I’ve been thinking through this idea/project for a while (and have some adjacent ones coming up–stay tuned), and we’re going to jump right into things. So what have I got planned?

What Really Happened in Iran in the 1953 Coup—And What’s Happening to Us Now

We’ve gotten very good at expressing our opinions online. But sometimes that fluency in snark, irony, and half-truths ends up damaging the very arguments we’re trying to make.

My first long-form piece is about the 1953 Iranian coup—and how the way it is discussed and critiqued today, especially in light of the recent bombing by Israel and the United States, reveals more about us than it does about actual history.

It’s a reflection on how social media and the 24-hour news cycle have changed our language, and why we urgently need to challenge the way we perform critique rather than reflect with nuance.

So, if you’re here for:

  • deep reads that challenge your assumptions,

  • truth-seeking that isn’t self-righteous,

  • and writing that holds both power and pain in the same hand—

…you’re in the right place. 😊

I'm excited to get started and can’t wait to start sharing a little bit of myself and my thoughts with you.

See you soon! -Jarrett
